About the Profile Club

History of Club

The late 19th century marked the zenith of New Hampshire’s grand hotels like the Mount Washington and The Profile House, which opened in 1853 in Franconia Notch. At its peak, The Profile House accommodated nearly 600 summer guests who enjoyed boating, hiking, tennis, and views of the rocky profile known as the Old Man of the Mountain.

By the end of the century, golf had become the rage, and over ten courses were built in the North Country to satisfy demand for the game. In 1897 The Profile House opened its golf course two miles to the north and east of the resort.

Clubhouse in 1800sThe famous golf course architect, Arthur H. Fenn, transformed farmland with its spectacular views of Cannon and Lafayette mountains into an iconic North Country course. The Profile golf course plays over nine holes with two sets of tees that create a challenging 18 hole, 5,810-yard experience.

At the turn of the 20th century, hotel guests took a narrow-gauge railroad or stagecoach to play golf and enjoy outings at the small clubhouse. In 1899 a few families organized a club at the course for their enjoyment. Following the1923 fire that destroyed The Profile House, those local families and summer visitors purchased the course. Today’s Profile Club traces its founding to these early members whose children and grandchildren continue their legacy.

Throughout the years, loyal members sustained the Club even in hard times such as during the Great Depression and World War II. In 1964 member contributions rebuilt the clubhouse after a disastrous fire. In 2014, with membership increasing and the need for more space and upgraded facilities, members donated funds to build a new clubhouse. On-going restoration of the course to the original Arthur Fenn design has greatly enhanced its playability, charm, and enjoyment.

Over the years the Club played an important part in the lives of many families and several generations have left their mark on the Club’s history. Loyalty and a sense of family among the members have built enduring friendships and have added to the rich heritage of The Profile Club.
